On October 7, Hamas committed horrific gender-based violence against Israeli women and men. Israel embarked on a retaliation that devastated a huge number of civilians in Gaza. Women’s bodies - not for the first time in history - became another bleeding battlefield during armed conflict. While feminist and women’s organizations adopted an attitude that encourages belief in the testimonies of victims of sexual violence, in this case the voices of some of these movements were unheard, or downplayed the atrocities of October 7. At stake are, on the one hand, the need to express solidarity and empathy toward victims, and, on the other hand, the difficulty to be conclusive before a thorough and independent investigation has been conducted.
In this upcoming webinar with Laura E. Adkins from Jewish Women International, based in the US, and Sarah Barukh, the founder of 125 et après, based in France, we will explore the reasons for these reactions in the feminist world. We will talk about the caution needed in dealing with collecting credible testimonies, the objective challenges to pursue evidence while many of the victims have perished alongside the will and the need to express solidarity even before a comprehensive investigation is completed.
The conversation will be moderated by Moran Avital, manager of the Pro-Human Campaign at Amnesty International Israel.
